In Nigeria and indeed the world over, most parents prefer to send their children to Private Schools as against Public Schools. And there is one simple explanation for this- Private Schools are usually better. Let’s face the truth- Private Schools are owned by private individuals who must do everything possible to satisfy their customers, make profit and stay in business. As such, you see them improving on a daily basis and attracting new customers while retaining the old ones. This scenario is very much unlike what happens in Public Schools. The Government is usually overly relaxed, lackadaisical even while the state of the education system deteriorates and deteriorates even further. It is only parents who cannot afford the expenses that will send their children to Public Schools. However, this post does not in any way undermine the fact that there are still some very good Public Schools available.
So, are you still wondering why virtually every parent (including those in charge of the education system) will desire their children to have private education? Well then let’s consider the following points below…
Private schools are typically more prestigious
I know this may sound vain, but in our society the level of one’s rank is judged using a lot of yardsticks; including where one’s children attend school. In this regard therefore, Private Schools are more prestigious than Public Schools. More so, Public Schools are more expensive and usually provide quality education.
Private schools have small classes and are therefore a lot more student-focused
Another major reason many parents consider Private School education for their kids is the number of students in each class. When compared to Public Schools, Private Schools usually have smaller classes. And when there are fewer students in a class, the teaching and learning process can better take place. In order words, smaller classes are better than big classes; resources tend to go round and teachers can really come down to the individual level to teach the students.
Private schools offer enhanced learning opportunities.
Many Private Schools provide students with exceptional educational opportunities. Through activities such as school-sponsored extracurricular activities, internship and volunteering opportunities, these schools focus on building the students’ future labour market resourcefulness. Moreover, the varied exposures and opportunities Private Schools offer their students also mean that the students are better positioned to excel in standardized tests. Little wonder Private School students are usually the ones that score the highest WAEC/JAMB scores.
