According to a report from The Punch Newspaper published, Taiwo Sunmola, a machinist, shared his harrowing experience during an interview with The Punch correspondent. He recounted the tragic loss of his 71-year-old father, which occurred three weeks after the passing of his elder sister. Taiwo Sunmola attributed the worsening of his father’s condition to alleged negligence in some government hospitals in Lagos State.
In his own words, Taiwo Sunmola, a 35-year-old originally from Odogbolu in Ogun State but currently residing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he works, stated, “I am Taiwo Sunmola, and I visited my father, Mudashiru Sunmola, on Thursday, August 24, when I arrived in Lagos State. I noticed he was experiencing sleeplessness and appeared preoccupied throughout the day. Concerned for his well-being, I took him to a pharmacy with a laboratory section for a thorough examination. After the assessment, a pharmacist recommended medications to help improve his condition.”
He explained that his father initially responded to treatment until Monday, August 28th, when his condition suddenly deteriorated. They rushed him to a hospital that day.
He continued, “Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) declined to admit my dad, as the doctors believed we couldn’t afford the N350,000 required for their special reservations due to a lack of available space.”
Taiwo Sunmola further disclosed that they faced similar refusals for admission at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba (the fifth government hospital they visited). Tragically, his father’s health deteriorated around 1 pm that Monday, leading to his passing due to the unavailability of a hospital bed.
